Carpenter's Island, Pennsylvania
Carpenter's Island, Pennsylvania is a historical location on the Delaware River in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, reportedly named for the Carpenter family who purchased land on the island in the late 17th century, originally located near the mouth of the Schuylkill River, just north of Hog Island, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Over time, Hog Island migrated north into Carpenter's Island; the area is now the Philadelphia International Airport.〔 Carpenter's Island appears on a 1753 map of Philadelphia and adjacent areas drawn by Nicolas Scull and George Heap,〔''A Map of Philadelphia and Parts Adjacent by N. Scull and G. Heap 1753'', http://www.lowermerionhistory.org/atlas/scull.html, accessed 17 Jun 2010.〕 is mentioned in American Revolutionary War histories about action on the Delaware River in late 1777,〔For example, Justin Clement, ill. by Stephen Walsh: ''Philadelphia 1777: "Taking the Capital"'', Osprey Publishing, Oxford, U.K., 2007, p. 73, viewable at http://books.google.com/books?id=kivLjOh4tDQC&pg=PA73&lpg=PA73&dq=%22Carpenter%27s+Island%22+PA&source=bl&ots=2LshI9zsQR&sig=0AFaTvt1CO-Uj027TOGWdVVDkGA&hl=en&ei=0fgbTM_bLcKB8gao1c2YDA&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=10&ved=0CCwQ6AEwCTge#v=onepage&q&f=false.〕 and is shown on a 1785 map drawn by William Faden.〔William Faden: ''The Course of Delaware River from Philadelphia to Chester, Exhibiting the several Works erected by the Rebels to defend its Passage, with the Attacks made upon them by His Majesty's Land & Sea Forces...1778'', http://www.raremaps.com/gallery/detail/23500/The_Course_of_Delaware_River_from_Philadelphia_to_Chester_Exhibiting_the/Faden.html, accessed 17 Jun 2010.〕 Alternate names are Carpenters Island, Cock's Island, Cocks Island, Fisher's Island, Fishers Island, and Peter Cock's Island.〔
